What’s the difference between trade and retail paint?

We asked our in-store experts to explain the key differences, why they’re important, and how it affects you. Here’s what they had to say…

Not all paint is the same

It’s not only the name and size of the tubs that is different, it’s the way the paints are produced in the factory and how well they coat a wall.

Trade paint is produced with a greater level of pigmentation and opacity compared to its retail counterpart which gives it a higher colour quality finish and far more ‘hiding power’. In other words, trade paint lets you paint a room in only one or two coats instead of the three or four.

Where can trade paint be used?

The short answer? Almost anywhere. Trade paints are very versatile and come in a number of different applications depending on what you need it for. If you’re painting a space that’s exposed to the elements, then water resistant or ‘weathershield’ paint is what you’re looking for. If you’re short on time, then ‘fast drying’ trade paint could be the one for you.

At Leyland SDM, we stock a wide range of trade paints at Leyland SDM, and our in-store experts are more than happy to help you find the right paint for your next job! Find your local branch.

What colour options are there?

Big name brands including Leyland Trade and Dulux Trade offer thousands of colours in a variety of sizes and finishes. If you’re looking for something classic, trendy or totally outrageous, you’ll find your perfect colour at your local Leyland SDM.

Can it only be bought in bulk?

Buying bulkier trade paint tubs is beneficial when you’re painting multiple rooms as the larger amount of paint allows for more consistency. It will also save you time and money.

However, you might only need only need 5 litres. That’s why brands like Leyland Trade and Dulux Trade offer high quality trade paint in more manageable 1 litre, 2.5 litre and 5 litre tins. This means that if you don’t need a big tub of trade paint, you won’t have to miss out on that trade quality finish.

Want to get a trade quality finish?

It’s not only the paint that helps you achieve a high-quality look. Even before opening the tin there are many things you can do to help you paint like a pro! For example, make sure you prepare your surfaces to be painted, pick up some fresh paint brushes, rollers, dustsheets and tape. And, of course, speak to our in-store experts to get the low down on getting a top-quality finish.
